We are constantly piloting new programs and brainstorming ways to help the animals of Detroit. We always want to hear your ideas on ways to help, whether it’s with adoptions, fosters, fundraising, community outreach, or beyond.
Come down to DACC any day of the week and you’ll see our volunteers hard at work walking dogs, socializing cats, doing laundry and dishes, or writing bios for animals to help them get adopted. Staff and volunteers work together and are one #teamDACC. Volunteer hours are 9am to 3pm seven days a week. Come on down!
FREE POP-PUP CLINICS
The best way to help shelter pets is to keep pets out of the shelter in the first place. We host free Pop-PUP clinics around town where we give out free microchips, free rabies vaccines, free city licenses, and more to Detroit, Highland Park, and Hamtramck residents. We also exchange prong and choke collars for harnesses and speak with owners about the benefits of sterilization.
COUCH SURFERS + SLUMBER PARTIES
How do we let a dog or cat decompress before a big adoption event? How do we learn more about how an animal acts in a home? How do we treat heartworm disease? With fosters! For one night, one week, one month, or longer, we have an innovative and flexible foster program.
Can’t take a dog home to foster? Maybe you can take them on a Detroit Dogventure! With the help of Maddie’s Fund, we’ve developed a day trip program where you can take a dog out of the shelter for a couple hours—to Belle Isle, to a pet store, or to your favorite local dog-friendly business. The dogs get a break from the shelter, we get valuable information about them, and they get exposure that can lead to adoption!
