Mission: Help Detroit Animals

Friends of Detroit Animal Care & Control (FoDACC) is committed to saving animals' lives, ensuring equal access to companion animals for those of all socio-economic levels, and raising the level of care for animals living in the city of Detroit. We work hand in hand with Detroit Animal Care & Control (DACC) to help the homeless animals at DACC and proactively keep animals out of our shelter in the first place.

FoDACC is a completely force-free organization. We believe in science-based training methods that are not harmful to a dog’s mental or physical state. We believe all dogs are individuals and we are against breed-specific legislation.

FoDACC exists to support DACC in the areas of volunteer management, donation solicitation and acceptance, and live release, which includes shelter intervention.

Volunteer Management

We believe in the transformative power of empathy, education, and genuine love for animals. Our volunteers are the backbone of our mission, ensuring that every canine and feline resident experiences care, enrichment, and understanding.

Our volunteers provide daily enrichment to the shelter animals, help animals get adopted at both onsite and offsite events, drive animals to partner shelters and rescues, manage social media, raise funds, and acquire donations.

Donations

The budget allocated to DACC by the City of Detroit often falls short of what is needed to operate a fully functional shelter and sustain lifesaving programs. Donations are the lifeblood of our organization, allowing us to bridge the gap and provide essential resources to our furry friends.

FoDACC supplements the budget allocated to DACC by the City of Detroit. We apply for grants, hold fundraisers, form relationships with donors/foundations, and accept all material and in-kind donations from our supporters to be used at DACC.

Live Outcomes

We actively collaborate with DACC to expand adoption opportunities, matching animals with families who provide them with the love and care they deserve. Our foster programs offer temporary homes, opening up shelter space and providing individual care that some animals need until their find their forever families. Additionally, through our transfer and transport initiatives, we facilitate the movement of animals to partner shelters and rescues, broadening their chances of finding forever homes. In cases of lost pets, we work diligently to reunite them with their families swiftly, ensuring that the joy of being together is never lost.

Shelter Interventions

Shelter life can be stressful for our beloved furry residents. That's why we have implemented innovative programs to provide comfort, companionship, and adventure.

Our dedicated volunteers bring smiles to our animals' faces by taking the dogs outside for refreshing walks and invigorating playtime, allowing them to breathe in the fresh air, stretch their legs, and catch up on cuddle time.

Our short-term foster program offers a much-needed break from the shelter environment. Community members take dogs on exciting day trips around town, giving our animals the chance to explore new places, meet friendly faces, and enjoy enriching experiences outside the shelter's confines.
