Pet Identification

Making Sure They Can Always Find Their Way Home

Detroit Animal Care & Control does not report to the police or to immigration control. Please do not hesitate to license your pet.

Nobody thinks their pet will get lost, but consider these facts:

  • 1 in 3 pets gets lost at least once in their lifetime

  • Only 16% of pets are reunited with their families

  • 10-20 lost pets come into Detroit Animal Care & Control every day, and most of them do not have identification

Protect your pet from being permanently lost by giving them identification. Identification enables:

  • Swift Reunions: In the unfortunate event that your pet goes missing, proper identification significantly speeds up the reunion process. Time is of the essence, and every moment counts in bringing your pet back home.

  • Emergency Situations: Identification is crucial during emergencies, ensuring that first responders and veterinary professionals can quickly access your contact details and any pertinent medical information.

  • Community Harmony: Responsible pet ownership includes being accountable for your pet's actions. Visible identification makes it easy for neighbors to identify your pet, fostering a sense of community and cooperation.

We strongly recommend at least two forms of identification: a license and a microchip.

Pet Licensing

Pet licenses are an important form of identification that enable Detroit Animal Care & Control (DACC) to return your pet to you should they become lost.

All dogs older than 6 months must be licensed with DACC. Proof of rabies vaccination is required for licensing. Licenses must be renewed each year and cost $10. DACC is open for licensing every day 10:30am - 3:30PM

Microchips

For an extra layer of protection, consider microchipping your pet. A tiny, painless implant beneath the skin holds a unique identification number linked to your contact details. When scanned at a vet clinic or animal shelter, this number provides an invaluable link to your information, increasing the likelihood of a joyful reunion. You can get your pet microchipped at any veterinary clinic.

Collar Tags

Collar tags are more than just accessories—they're a lifeline for your pet. Engraved with essential information such as your contact details and your pet's name, anybody can read the tag and let you know where your pet is.

These tags are a quick and effective way to ensure a safe return home in case your pet goes on an unexpected adventure. You can get collar tags at most pet stores, including online pet stores.
