Scrambled the Shelter Pup Selected for Service Dog Training

Every day, incredible dogs walk through the doors of Detroit Animal Care and Control.

Some arrive scared, some full of energy, and others—like Scrambled—shine with quiet potential just waiting to be recognized. Today, we’re thrilled to share that Scrambled has been selected for something truly special: he’s officially begun training as a service dog for a veteran or first responder through our amazing partners at Blue Star Service Dogs.

What Makes Scrambled Special?

Scrambled’s journey began like many shelter dogs, but something about him stood out. After being pre-screened by one of our dedicated volunteers, Scrambled checked all the boxes for what Blue Star looks for in potential service dogs:

✔️ Confident and friendly
✔️ Comfortable with tail pulling, ear handling, and paw touches — crucial for working with families and children
✔️ Non-reactive to other dogs
✔️ Focused on people
✔️ Calm in the face of loud or startling noises
✔️ Able to crawl under chairs — an important skill for navigating medical appointments and public spaces

When Trainer Barb from Blue Star met Scrambled in person, her response said it all:

“He’s a no-brainer.”

A New Chapter Begins

On May 1st, Scrambled was officially transferred to Thumb Correctional Facility, where he’ll begin his evaluation and initial training. For the next six weeks, he’ll be closely observed and guided through foundational skills. If he proves to be the right fit (and we’re pretty sure he will!), he’ll continue in the program for an additional six to eight months.

During that time, Scrambled will be paired with a veteran or first responder and begin building the bond that defines all great service dog partnerships.

A Partnership with Purpose

Friends of Detroit Animal Care and Control is proud to collaborate with Blue Star Service Dogs—fellow beneficiaries of the Michigan Animal Welfare Foundation —to create life-changing opportunities not only for dogs like Scrambled but also for the people they go on to serve.

This partnership is a powerful example of what happens when shelters, nonprofits, and the community come together:
a dog’s life is transformed, and in turn, they transform the life of someone else.

Hidden Gems, Waiting to Shine

Scrambled’s story is a reminder that shelters are full of hidden gems. Behind every kennel door is a dog with untapped potential—whether they go on to become a service dog, a hiking buddy, or a couch potato companion, all they need is a chance.

We’ll be sharing updates on Scrambled’s progress as he continues his training, and we hope his journey inspires you to come find your own hidden gem at Detroit Animal Care and Control.
