FoDACC Is Back in Action

Insurance Secured, Programs Returning!

A very happy dog with a big smile

We are thrilled to share some long-awaited news: Friends of Detroit Animal Care and Control (FoDACC) has successfully secured general liability insurance! This means we are finally able to start bringing back the programs you’ve been asking about: Dogventures, Slumber Parties, Fostering, and more! — the very programs that help get adoptable shelter dogs more exposure out in the community and into loving homes where they belong.

We can’t thank you enough for your patience and support during this challenging time. Because of your encouragement and understanding, we’ve stayed focused on finding solutions — and now, we’re ready to move forward.

Why This Took So Long — and Why It Matters

Our previous insurer did not renew our policy due to a lawsuit FoDACC is named in, even though the dog involved was never in FoDACC’s care or part of any FoDACC programming. Still, as anyone in animal welfare knows, liability insurance is critical for the work we do and we have been searching for months to find a carrier willing to insure us.

We made the difficult — but necessary — decision to obtain coverage that came with a significant increase in price because we know how vital these programs are for the dogs of Detroit. Offsite adoption events, foster programs, and enrichment opportunities save animals’ lives. Period. And we’re committed to this mission, no matter the challenges or financial cost.

What’s Coming Back

Over the next several weeks, we’ll be phasing back in the following programs that have been on hold:

  • Dogventures start back up Friday, August 1
Take a shelter dog on a fun outing and help them get a shelter break and just maybe find their future family.  Detroit Dogventures will be offered daily starting August 1.

  • Offsite Dog Adoption Events return Saturday, August 9
Come meet adoptable DACC dogs in Farmington Hills on Saturday, August 9, ahead of the Bowl 4 Animal Rescue fundraiser at Country Lanes. And stay tuned to our social media channels for announcements about future events where you can meet adoptable dogs in fun, community settings all over Metro Detroit.

  • Slumber Parties are back starting Friday, August 15
Slumber Parties are short-term foster programs for adoptable dogs where you host the dog for one or more nights. They give dogs a chance to decompress and enjoy a home environment.

  • Foster Programs resume Friday, August 15
Fostering is one of the most powerful ways to help a shelter dog, and we are so excited to fully reopen these lifesaving programs. If you previously fostered with us or are new to fostering, we’re thrilled to have your support.

New Foster Requirements

We are now requiring the completion of the free foster training course brought to you by our Community Foster and Adopter Education Initiative in partnership with K9 Turbo Training and Second Chances Animal Resources in order to foster with us. This 90-minute live virtual session, and will go over everything you need to know about bringing home a shelter animal–whether it’s your 1st or 201st pup.

We Need Your Help More Than Ever

These past months have been difficult, but thanks to your patience, kindness, and ongoing commitment to Detroit’s shelter animals, we’ve come through it stronger than ever. We are beyond excited to get back to what we do best: connecting dogs with loving people, giving them time and space to decompress, and helping them find their way home.

But absorbing these increased insurance costs puts a strain on our small nonprofit. If you believe in the work we do and want to help us continue saving lives, please consider making a donation.

Thank you for standing by us. The dogs — and our team — are so grateful.

Stay tuned for updates, announcements, and opportunities to get involved. We’re back — and we can’t wait to see you (and your fosters!) soon.
